Smothering turf grass is a chemical free approach to preparing a portion of your lawn for conversion to a Pop Up Prairie. Pop Up Prairies are urban plantings that exclusively utilize Missouri native wildflowers and grasses. Plants need sunlight to grow, smother your turf grass with something like a tarp or cardboard for two or more months during the growing season. Remove the barrier and plant your Pop Up Prairie in the fall.
Weed control can be prolonged by laying down biodegradable weed barrier and mulch at the time of planting. Eventually, the plants will grow together and fill-in and provide natural weed control.
Why do this? Pop Up Prairies provide much needed habitat for bees and butterflies at a time when destruction of habitat is happening at an unbridled pace right outside our city. Understand, the new frontier is found in urban spaces.
